The city of Gallipoli, called Kale polis "beautiful city " by the Greeks, is divided into two parts, the ancient part and the most recent part. The old part, which is the historical centre, is located in a limestone island connected to mainland by a narrow arched bridge. The most recent, the Borgo, is located on a promontory over 2 km long and contains modern buildings like the famous Glass Palace.
There are also three small islands, the largest of which, St. Andrew, houses a lighthouse and has a great importance on a both historical and natural level.
